How to Find a Therapist

Updated: Jan 3, 2024

How Do I Find a Therapist?

First things first, do you have insurance?

If you have insurance, one option is to call your insurance and ask for a list of agencies and/or providers that accept your insurance.

You can also pay out-of-pocket for a therapist and ask if they provide superbills. With a superbill, you can talk to your insurance and see if they will reimburse you for all or part of the cost of therapy. (Results vary)

What are some sites I can use to look for a therapist?

These sites may also include therapists who accept your insurance.

To name a few:

OpenPathCollective.org (for low-income needs)

There are likely many more. I encourage you to do your research to find whatever therapist is right for you

*Disclaimer: I do advertise on some of these sites.

What about Apps/Online Services?

There are other options like Path Mental Health, Headway, Better Help, TalkSpace, Cerebral.

Are there other options?

Sure! Remember, therapy might not be for everybody. One option I highly recommend is first talking to your doctor. They know you and can make recommendations for care.

Other options include:

- Support Groups

- Skills or Psychoeducation Groups

- Coaching

- Psychiatry/Medication Only Services
